Stakeholder groups

The NHS Diabetic Eye Screening Programme works closely with a number of organisations devoted to research, campaigns and the care and treatment of people living with diabetes and sight loss.

See below for more information on some of these stakeholder organisations.

 

1. Diabetes UK

Diabetes UK is the UK's largest charity devoted to the treatment and care of people with diabetes. It funds research, campaigns and helps people to live with the condition. More information about the charity’s work and its support for the national screening programme can be found at  www.diabetes.org.uk

 

2. NHS Diabetes

NHS Diabetes is a national organisation supporting improvement in diabetes services. It works to raise the quality of diabetes care in England by supporting the healthcare community and people with diabetes.

It helps to develop and support new guidelines, standards and systems designed to improve care. Formerly the National Diabetes Support Team, the organisation was relaunched in early 2009. Visit www.diabetes.nhs.uk for more information.

 

3. Diabetes Research Wellness Foundation

The Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF) is a registered charity established in the UK in 1998. It's mission is to find a cure for diabetes through the funding of medical research; to raise awareness to diabetes to enable prevention and early diagnosis; and to support, advise and educate via its Diabetes Wellness Network.

4. British Association of Retinal Screening

The British Association of Retinal Screening is the professional organisation for those who provide retinal screening services for people with diabetes. It provides an educational, representational and support resource for those involved in all aspects of retinal screening via the internet and by organising conferences, meetings and training workshops. 5. The College of Optometrists

The College of Optometrists is the professional, scientific and examining body for optometry in the UK, working for the public benefit. Supporting its 14,000 members in all aspects of professional development, the College provides pre-registration training and assessment, continuous professional development opportunities, and advice and guidance on professional conduct and standards, enabling members to serve their patients as well as possible and contribute to the wellbeing of local communities. 

The College also funds research and works in partnership with other charities and professional bodies to improve eye health nationally and internationally: it hosts the British Optical Association Museum, the European Academy of Optometry and Optics, and the World Council of Optometry.

6. UK National Screening Committee

The UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) advises Government Ministers and the NHS in the four UK countries about all aspects of screening and supports implementation of screening programmes. Its website is www.screening.nhs.uk.

 

7. Royal National Institute for Blind People (RNIB)

The RNIB is the leading charity offering practical support and information to anyone in the UK with a sight problem. Visit www.rnib.org.uk for more information.

 

8. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is a charity that funds research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes and its complications, and has made retinopathy research a particular priority. 9. Insulin Dependent Diabetes Trust

The Insulin Dependent Diabetes Trust is a registered charity for people living with diabetes run by people living with diabetes. It offers information in non-medical language and also offers support to partners, parents and other members of the family. 10. Action for Blind People

Action for Blind People is a national charity with local reach, providing practical help and support to blind and partially sighted people of all ages. Visit www.actionforblindpeople.org.uk for more information.

 

11. Young Diabetologists Forum

The Young Diabetologists Forum represents and supports the interests of trainee/junior doctors and young consultants who are involved in any aspect of diabetes care or research and are members of Diabetes UK. For more information visit www.youngdiabetologists.org

 

12. Scottish Diabetic Retinopathy Screening

The Scottish Diabetic Retinopathy Screening service is a National Services Division programme available across all areas of Scotland. People aged 12 and over diagnosed with diabetes are automatically invited once a year for an eye screen appointment. Screening is initially carried out by digital retinal photography which is graded and quality assured using nationally agreed standards and policies. Visit www.ndrs.scot.nhs.uk.
